A letter to the local member for parliament

I was banned from Poker Champs the other week for being, it seems, Australian.

Hi Mr Andren,

As my local member for Parliament, I was hoping you could shed some light on something I discovered this week.

I used to have an account with an online poker website where I would play poker for free.  I never gambled with money as I believe it’s a waste, but I enjoy the card game ‘Texas Hold’em Poker’.

However, this website banned my account and all other Australian accounts declaring that Australian Federal Law now states that “In-Play betting on the internet is forbidden.  Unfortunately, poker is deemed to be In-Play betting.”

Could you verify if this is true and why?

Thanks in advance,

Chris Dunstall
Bathurst Resident.

The email trail that started this:

Hi,

The Australian Federal law states that In-Play betting on the internet is forbidden.  Unfortunately, poker is deemed to be In-Play betting.

The decision has therefore been taken to close Australian accounts.

(c) a service for the conduct of a lottery; or
(d) a service for the supply of lottery tickets; or
(e) a service for the conduct of a game, where:
(i) the game is played for money or anything else of value; and
(ii) the game is a game of chance or of mixed chance and skill; and
(iii) a customer of the service gives or agrees to give consideration to play or enter the game; or
(f) a gambling service (within the ordinary meaning of that expression) that is not covered by any of the above paragraphs.

I don't know enough about Poker Champs sorry, does it seem like it comes under that?

Yes, there are money tables in Poker Champs.

However, there are also free tables which I only ever played.

So I guess instead of not allowing Australians onto the Money tables, they've just banned the lot of us.

I found another poker game anyways. :)

When I'm in Bathurst for xmas we should all get together and play poker.

Sounds good, I've not used my poker set in a while... :)

Okay then, I will hold you to this :) Actually I've played poker once in my life and have totally forgotten everything. So you'll beat me good. But I'll have a shirt that says 'i pwn boys' then, maybe that'll help...
